2009 Tour Down Under

Gear up for a week-long festival of action and entertainment from 18 - 25 January 2009, when the world's best cycling teams light up the streets of Adelaide and South Australia.

The event, which in 2008 became the first UCI ProTour race outside Europe, will see over half a million spectators take to the streets to watch some of the greatest teams in international cycling soar past.

The 2009 Tour Down Under promises an action-packed week of fast and furious racing. South Australia is the place to be in January. Come along and be a part of the first stop in world cycling.

ARMSTRONG BRINGS PUBLICITY BOON

Lance Armstrong's plan to make his comeback to professional cycling at next year's Tour Down Under has led to a multi-million-dollar publicity boon for the State.

Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith says initial calculations put the value of media coverage generated by the world coup at more than $15 million - and rising.

"We know that figure will skyrocket when we include the value of all print, television and radio coverage received since the news first broke 16 days ago," Dr Lomax-Smith says.

"We have a small team of volunteers collating all of the articles, which are easier to measure with a ruler because of the rising height of the collection.

"Snaring Lance Armstrong for his comeback ride is such a massive coup for the race and South Australia as a whole, and has brought us incredible publicity.
