Safety at the event

Did you know riders can reach speeds in excess of 60 kilometres per hour during the race?

Santos Tour Down Under 2014

The following tips are for your safety as spectators, and the safety of the competitors.

General safety tips

  • Do not stand on the road.
  • Stand/sit well back from the edges of the road. Cyclists will often use the edges of the road to overtake.
  • Do not attempt to touch riders.
  • Do not hold objects in the path of riders during the race i.e. flags or cameras.
  • Do not leave or throw any object onto the road.
  • Do not hold selfie sticks or go-pros over the barriers to capture race footage.
  • Monitor children and prams at all times. Prams should not be left by the edge of the road.
  • Keep pets on a leash and well back from the road at all times.
  • Take all rubbish with you when you leave the area.

Road closures

The Santos Tour Down Under operates under fully closed roads for the People’s Choice Classic and Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6 race circuits and at all start and finish locations of the regional stages (Stages 1-5). Roads will be closed and detour signs will be in place. A rolling road closure system will be in place for the remainder of the race routes on Stages 1-5. A rolling road closure means the police will temporarily close roads to allow the race to pass by; this closure does not usually last longer than 20 minutes, however does depend on race conditions during the day. The green light vehicle is the final vehicle of the race convoy and once this vehicle has passed, the police will be able to reopen the road.

Information on daily road closures can be found here.

Roadside safety

  • Keep off the roads while they are closed.
  • Cyclists riding in the Santos Tour Down Under travel at speeds in excess of 60 kilometres per hour. They cannot swerve or stop suddenly to avoid objects or people in their way. Cycling can be a dangerous sport for both competitors and spectators. Riders and support vehicles use both sides of the road.
  • Listen for advance warnings from South Australia Police and race commentators.
  • Ensure that at all times spectators including children and pets are well back from the side of the road.
  • Please ensure all items such as photography equipment and promotional items do not block the riders' path.

Sun protection

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with approximately two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70. Protect your skin from the sun by arming yourself with plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and a big shady hat, and staying in the shade wherever possible. Free sunscreen will be available at all race finishes and at the Cancer Council SA stands. Call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 for more information on sun protection and skin cancer.
