Explore the People's Choice Classic

People’s Choice Classic key times

The People’s Choice Classic Stage is a circuit in the heart of our vibrant Adelaide and acts as a prelude to the UCIWorldTour race.

A wonderful combination of world-class metropolitan culture, wine and food with the physical and emotional space to breathe, in Adelaide you can explore the vibrant restaurants, cafes and bars while you enjoy the fast-paced racing action. Relax and meander your way through the picturesque parklands and botanical gardens which surround the city. Adventure through the playgrounds, bike ways, and local haunts. Whether you want a fast-paced escapade or a laid-back soak in the sun, you can choose your own adventure around the People’s Choice Classic.

Food and drinks

Leisurely take in the morning or get your caffeine fix on the go. Dotted in busy streets around town you’ll find stylish, upbeat hang outs with passionate foodies serving savvy dishes all day long. From the north we have the eclectic mix of earthy and sophisticated chic cafés and boutiques along Rundle Street. Pep yourself up with artisan coffees and teas and sneak in some shopping while you’re there.

Planning your post-race dining? For a truly South Australian experience within the city centre, visit Australian bistro, Restaurant Blackwood on Rundle Street, owned by chef Jock Zonfrillo of world-famous Restaurant Orana. Native and wild ingredients along with locally sourced produce form the heart of the exceptional menu. Or experience Chef Duncan Welgemoed’s edgy masterpieces at Africola. As the name suggests, the carefully crafted barbequed meat delights are inspired by Welgemoed’s South African heritage. If you’re looking for more options later in the week, local favourite Peel St and new-kid-on-the-block Shobosho should be at the top of your list for lunch or dinner.

The Collins Bar

Who says you can’t have it all! The Hilton Adelaide’s Coal Cellar and Grill offers the best of South Australia’s produce skillfully prepared using a variety of cooking methods. The Collins Bar, a vibrant classy cocktail bar, still within the Hilton Adelaide, is only a step away for an aperitif and digestif, to complement your experience before and after your meal. Although the lively atmosphere may see you there until the wee hours of the morning.

Explore the heartbeat of Adelaide’s small bar scene. Scattered from east to west, on rooftops or down alleys each with their own atmosphere, charm and cult following. Hugging the People’s Choice Classic route are Bar Torino on Hutt Street, or try your luck at a hub of new eateries and nooks in Ebenezer Place, Vardon Avenue and Rundle Street. Cast your eyes over the rooftops and beyond at 2KW or Hennessy Roof Top Bar above the Mayfair Hotel. These roof-top treats expose Adelaide’s treasures from a penthouse view. From here, pop into modern French inspired La Buvette on Gresham Street before delving into the laneway culture of Peel, Leigh and Bank Streets.

Things to see and do

The People’s Choice Classic is host to the first of two Family Day events during the Santos Tour Down Under. Treat the kids to free entertainment and lots of cycling-themed fun while you sit back on a picnic rug and enjoy the racing action.

The 2018 People's Choice Undies Run for Bowel Cancer sees nearly 2,000 people take to the circuit in a fun-packed fiesta designed to raise funds and awareness for bowel cancer on Sunday, 14 January 2018. In 2018 the event will be even cheekier - babies and toddlers will join the 2.3km run for the first time as superheroes for bowel cancer prevention, donning special capes to take on the world for a good cause. Bring the whole fun and feel free to run, walk and jog the distance at the Santos Tour Down Under track right before the People's Choice Classic. Registrations are now open online at www.undiesrun.com.au.

Rundle Street is rich with sleek, high-end boutiques and niche alternative stores. This unique mixture underpins this vibrant shopping, café, and bar district. Moving west you’ll hit Rundle Mall where shopping is most definitely not a sideline sport. Enjoy the open-air mall and variety of outlets and fashion houses. Uncover the chic new Rundle Place with a haven of over 60 stores and a plush hub of eateries. Or sit back and relax with a coffee in hand and listen to one of the many buskers fill the air with exotic sounds.
