Break away.... with your mates
06 Oct 16
The sun’s out and you’re on a cycling trip with your mates. Life is good — and will be even better with stops at these gems.
Fancy a stint in the saddle? Sign up for the Bupa Challenge Tour presented by The Advertiser and experience a race stage on the same day as the professionals. There’s also the Norton Summit Time Trial for those feeling a little more competitive.
Barossa wineries, Barossa
The Barossa is a wine-lover’s dream destination. With more than 80 cellar doors and 150 wineries, you’ll find something to explore at every turn. Our favourites include Elderton in Nuriootpa, which offers a range of tasting experiences and a great cellar door menu.
- Staging Connections Stage 2
The Scenic Hotel, Norton Summit, Adelaide Hills
As you’d expect, it’s all about the view at this historic hotel. Settle in and await the race with a lunch of classic pub food: schnitzels, burgers, seafood and salads.
Prancing Pony Brewery, Totness, Adelaide Hills
It’s official: the good folk at Prancing Pony have created the best beer in the world (yes, world). The nod – for their India Red Ale – came at London’s International Beer Challenge in September, and the tipple has been flowing freely since. Get along to try it for yourself and enjoy a meal while you’re there.
Yankalilla Bakery, Yankalilla, Fleurieu Peninsula
All that cycling worked up an appetite? Hit the Yankalilla Bakery to refuel — and get ready for a mega selection of baked goods. Staff nominate their Aussie parmy pie as a best-seller: with chicken mornay, neapolitana sauce and melted cheese, it’ll have your legs spinning once more.
Port Noarlunga Surf School, Port Noarlunga, Fleurieu Peninsula
Take a surf or paddle board lesson with the professionals at Port Noarlunga Surf School. All equipment – including a wetsuit and sunscreen – can be supplied if needed, with a maximum of eight people in each class.
National Motor Museum, Birdwood, Adelaide Hills
A must for anyone with a soft spot for Aussie motoring history. You’ll find up to 400 vehicles on display across three pavilions, plus the many pieces of memorabilia that give each era its identity.
Lobethal Bierhaus, Lobethal, Adelaide Hills
This craft microbrewery and restaurant offers tastings of its much-loved wares, plus local wine and diverse bistro dishes. It’ll be the perfect spot to rest those weary legs after the Bupa Challenge Tour — or you could simply get comfortable early in the day and wait for the pros to storm through town.
Adelaide Biplanes, Aldinga, Fleurieu Peninsula
Take in the rolling wine country of McLaren Vale – not to mention the spectacular local coastline — from the skies. Whether you’re up for a nostalgic cruise or a heart-pounding open cockpit experience, this is the place.
Alpha Box & Dice, McLaren Vale, Fleurieu Peninsula
Alpha Box & Dice offers small-batch wines made with minimal intervention. Enjoy a relaxed and casual cellar door experience at this young-at-heart winery. Back in the city, head to the Adelaide City Council Tour Village for a drink in the Pure Blonde Beer Garden, which will feature the new Pure Blonde Crisp Apple Cider.
- Be Safe Be Seen MAC Stage 6
Dinner at Africola, Adelaide
Fresh, fun and fast-paced, Africola is led by acclaimed chef Duncan Welgemoed and celebrates the food of his South African homeland. Choose your own dishes or leave selection to the kitchen – either way you’re in for a memorable feast.
Take the traditional land-based Aussie BBQ approach to a whole new level and enjoy a fest with your mates while floating on the picturesque River Torrens in a donut-shaped boat, seated around a BBQ grill and table top! Bookings are required in advance - book here.
