New Regional Rides for 2018 Santos Tour Down Under

Regional Rides 2018

Cycling fans will have even more opportunities to become involved with the Santos Tour Down Under, with two regional rides added to the program for the event’s 20th year.

The first ever regional Bupa mini tour for kids will be held at Lyndoch on Tuesday, January 16.

Cycling stars of the future aged 6-12 will be able to ride laps of the Stage 1 finish line circuit before the pros arrive.

On Thursday January 18, Fleurieu families and holidaymakers will have the opportunity to ride together under the official UCI WorldTour finish arch at Victor Harbor as part of the Bupa Family Ride.

Participants will take on the Stage 3 finish straight, riding laps along the esplanade.

It’s anticipated the two new rides, which complement those already on offer in the city, will encourage even more visitors and locals to participate in the event.

The 2017 TDU injected $56.5 million (up from $49.6 million in 2016) into the state’s visitor economy and created the equivalent of 683 full time jobs.

The TDU also attracted a record number of spectators with almost 840,000 fans lining the streets and more than 42,750 cycling fans making the journey from interstate and overseas for the event.

Registrations are now open for the Bupa Family Ride and Bupa mini tour for kids regional rides at www.tourdownunder.com.au

The 2018 Santos Tour Down Under will be held 13 – 21 January 2018, celebrating 20 great years.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell

The Tour Down Under is an incredibly popular event and we want to build on that momentum.

We’re always looking at ways to innovate and get even more visitors and locals involved.

In 2017 the event pumped a record $56.5 million into our state’s economy and created hundreds of jobs.

Next year marks the 20th edition of the race and we hope to celebrate with record crowds.

Let’s hit the million mark and show the world just how impressive the Tour Down Under – and South Australia – really are.

The 40,000 plus visitors who travel to SA specifically for the event are the best ambassadors we could have, so I’m really pleased we can offer additional opportunities for cycling enthusiasts to get involved, and bring their families and friends along for the ride.
