2015 Santos Tour Down Under and triple Australian time trial champion Rohan Dennis is the latest rider to exit the BMC Racing Team, after inking a deal to rider for Bahrain Merida until at least 2020.

The Adelaide local who has led both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia during his career, fulfils Bahrain Merida’s publicised desire to acquire a top time triallist who can also mix it with the best general classification riders in grand tours.

“I am extremely excited to be joining Bahrain Merida for the next two years,” Dennis said.

“The organisation has been upfront and honest about their plans and objectives for me the entire time, which is really positive.

“I’m looking forward to working with a team that is going to invest in my future and I am very keen to see what we can achieve together. I would like to thank all at BMC for a great past four years where I felt I made good progress in my career and I can’t wait to continue that progress with Bahrain Merida.”

Bahrain Merida was established ahead of the 2017 UCI WorldTour and is home to name riders like Vincenzo Nibali and the Izagirre brothers.

Team general manager Brett Copeland forecast a greater team focus on developing Dennis as a general classification rider, particularly in the Grand Tours.

“Rohan adds a great value to the team, not only as one of the world’s best time triallists, but we believe his ability to race in the general classification of grand tours is where we want to invest in and we are all very excited to be able to work together.

“Rohan is a true professional in all areas and we feel his professional mentality fits our team perfectly.”

The 2019 Santos Tour Down Under will be held in Adelaide, South Australia from 10-20 January.
