Santos Tour Down Under Hall of fame

The Santos Tour Down Under Hall of Fame recognises athletes, administrators, media representatives and officials who have made a significant contribution to the event since its inception in 1999.

Inductees have been selected by a committee representing the cycling industry, media and relevant stakeholders in the Santos Tour Down Under, including former Olympic cycling champion Anna Meares and cycling commentator Matt Keenan.

Phil Liggett

2025 Inductee

The iconic voice of cycling, Phil Liggett, has been the voice of the Santos Tour Down Under since the first race in 1999, which immediately provided a level of credibility at a global level.

Phil gave credence to the Santos Tour Down Under globally with his cycling knowledge and genuine love of South Australia and the race. 

Phil was part of the inaugural group to promote the arrival of the Tour Down Under in South Australia and then actively elevate its status over time.   His commitment to the event supported SA’s bid to become UCI ProTour in 2008.

Paul Sherwen

2025 Inductee

Paul was the ultimate commentator domestique. He was the rider broadcaster who along with Phil (a well-renowned cycling broadcast duo) brought global recognition to the Santos Tour Down Under.

He embraced South Australia becoming an advocate with his bakery stops for each and every pie and his love of RM Williams boots.

A broadcast commentator who was involved in the TDU broadcast from approximately 2002 through to 2017.

Paul passed away in 2018.

Mike Turtur

2025 Inductee

Track cycling Olympic gold medallist, Mike Turtur, was the inaugural Race Director of the Santos Tour Down Under and held this position for 22 years from 1999 to 2020, until his retirement.

He made a significant contribution to the original format of the race and its growth to WorldTour status, the highest level of road cycling in the world.

Working with a number of others, he helped shape the format of the race, including devising one of the key success factors, the single base for all teams in the CBD (a unique selling proposition for stage races around the world).

André Greipel

2025 Inductee

German sprint sensation, retiring in 2021 - André Greipel, competed in the Santos Tour Down Under a total of 9 times between 2008 and 2020.

He holds the record for the most stage wins ever with a huge 18 wins. Additionally, he was the overall champion in 2008 and 2010 and won the overall Sprint jersey twice (2008 and 2010).

Simon Gerrans

2025 Inductee

A former Australian road cycling champion, Simon Gerrans competed in 14 editions of the Santos Tour Down Under between 2001 and 2018.

During this time he was the overall champion 4 times (2006, 2012, 2014, 2016) and holds the records for the most Santos Tour Down Under General Classification wins of all time.
