Reigning Santos Tour Down Under (TDU) champion Jay Vine headlines a list of 12 Australians in the first Grand Tour of the season, the Giro d’Italia, which begins on May 8.

Vine, who stormed to his second ochre jersey with a stunning stage win into Uraidla in January, has overcome two crashes and injury setbacks early in the year to make it to the start line with UAE Emirates – XRG.

The 30-year-old will be targeting the Stage 10 individual time trial during the Giro which begins in Bulgaria and finishes in Rome three weeks and almost 3500km later.

Vine will be joined in the Giro by a strong contingent of Australians including Chris Harper who returns to the scene of the biggest win of his career last year.

Harper won the Queen Stage of last year’s Giro with a massive solo effort to Sestriere and has since switched teams to be riding for Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team.

The peloton will also include sprinter Kaden Groves who won stages of the Giro in 2023 and 2025 and Jai Hindley who won the pink jersey overall in 2022.

Ben O’Connor is the sole Australian rider for Australian team Jayco – AlUla who finished fourth overall in the Giro in 2024 and last year won a stage of the Tour de France.
