The excitement of the Santos Tour Down Under extends beyond just the peloton. Driven by local heroes and events like RADL GRVL, which offers riders a chance to experience the best of the region's unpaved roads first-hand, South Australia has become an international destination for gravel cycling.
Adelaide cycling legend Tiff Cromwell, who knows these paths well, shares her must-ride gravel tracks that capture the diverse and stunning landscapes right around the TDU race routes.
These rides are the perfect prelude to Australia’s best and biggest gravel race, RADL GRVL, happening in McLaren Vale on Friday 23 January.
Men's Stage 1 - Barossa, Wednesday 21 January (long)
Tiff's tip: Don't just watch the race – ride the race! Use the local gravel network to track the peloton, catch the action at multiple checkpoints, then ride straight to the stage finish.
Men's Stage 1 - Barossa, Wednesday 21 January (short)
Health Partners Men's Stage 2 - Norwood to Uraidla, Thursday 22 January
Tiff's tip: Make sure to plan your fuel stops along the route!
- Coffee stop (Approx. 42km): Grab a well-deserved break at Emma and Ivy or Mighty Light Coffee Roasters in Lobethal. This is perfectly timed just before the first Ziptrak sprint location.
- Food stop: The Uraidla Bakery offers a fantastic later stop for those pushing on toward the Paracombe climb and the Nairne finish line
Don't forget to register for RADL GRVL in McLaren Vale on Friday 23 January.
